How to Break into Marketing

by Jon Mitchell
Sales & Marketing Expert

This is a question I am regularly asked, and the answer to which depends on a number of key criteria. Which area of marketing interests you? Do you have any marketing experience? How many years have you been working for? What are your transferable skills?

Marketing is an extremely competitive industry and obtaining practical experience is the key. If you lack experience don’t be put off – it is possible to break into the industry, just make sure you have a very clear understanding of what you are looking to do and be knowledgeable and passionate.

Initially detailed research is important, as there are a number of questions to consider. Do you want to work on the client or agency-side? Which area of marketing do you want to work in - brand management, brand consultancy, advertising, sponsorship, PR, promotional marketing, direct marketing etc? Even if you have little knowledge of the industry, do some initial research and focus on one area to begin with – you can always expand your search later on.
