Working at Yell

Before I joined Yell I had already heard a lot about the kind of business that it was. The training and development opportunities on offer seemed hard to beat and the rewards were extremely competitive. Because of this it’s not the easiest business in the world to get into, so I was really pleased when my interviews went well and I was offered a Telesales position.

From day one I was made to feel really welcome. Of course all sales environments are competitive – that’s one of the things that makes it such a buzz – but everyone was so supportive it made settling in much easier than I had expected. My manager was always on hand to offer help and advice and seemed to take a real interest in my progress. The training was just as impressive as people say. It’s delivered by people who know really their stuff and it’s practically based, making it easier to implement what you’ve learned when you get back to your desk.

The rewards are fantastic too. As well as the obvious commission that’s available (in my first year my total salary was around £35,000), there are also lots of other incentives run at a local or regional level. These include regular recognition of your achievements on a monthly basis within your area, as well as annual Gold Awards, where everyone has the opportunity to nominate a colleague whose attitude, approach and performance marks them out as exceptional. In my second year at Yell I was amazed to be nominated and won a Gold Award for the progress that I had made since joining the business. The winners are invited to a high profile event hosted by our Executive Management Group, which is a great way of getting people together from across the business, building team spirit and giving us a chance to share experiences.

By talking to people from all over the country I heard the same kind of story about the culture and support on offer – so it’s clear that I wasn’t just lucky to have had such a positive experience, it’s just what Yell is all about. Everything is designed to support and help you achieve your targets. If you succeed the business succeeds, so whatever support you need, it’s right there for you. In my case I wanted to progress from Telesales to Field Sales so I worked closely with my manager to plan out how I could achieve this, setting key goals along the way. I also had the chance to go out with people who were already in a Field Sales role on client meetings, which helped me find out for myself the sort of skills that I needed to develop. It’s this long-term career development that marks Yell out as being different from other sales operations and it’s just what I was looking for.

After a lot of hard work I became a Field Sales Consultant and, although the role is significantly different from my previous one, the support, recognition and rewards are just as impressive. Of course everyone is different. I can’t promise that your experience will be the same as mine. But if you’re willing to put in the effort, I’m convinced that Yell is the business to join.
